On Sunday my class made this cross on a hill to help them remember the true meaning of Easter.
I chose to do this craft 2 weeks before Easter so that the children would be able to display the cross during the weeks leading up to Easter and hopefully remember that candy and eggs aren’t really what Easter is all about.
I did some of the assembly of this craft before class. If I had an older group of children then I could have broken it up into two weeks where they did the painting one Sunday and the assembly the next.
Materials
- 1 Large Popsicle Stick
- 1 Regular Popsicle Stick
- Brown Paint
- 1/2 of a 2 1/2 inch Styrofoam Ball
- Green Paint
- Foam Paintbrushes
- Buttons
- Straight Pins with Heads
- Purple Felt
- Hot Glue and/or Regular Glue
Instructions
1. Paint the popsicle sticks with the brown paint.
2. Paint the 1/2 styrofoam ball with green paint.
3. Hot glue/glue the regular popsicle stick perpendicular to the large popsicle stick to form a cross.
4. Cut a 1 inch by 9 inch piece of the purple felt. (The felt represents the robe that Jesus wore that the soldiers cast lots for.)
5. Wrap the felt around the cross like in the picture above and glue it in place.
6. Insert the pins into the buttons on the green ball to represent flowers on a hill.
7. Place the popsicle stick cross into the center of the green styrofoam ball.
Be sure to read the Easter story to the children. I read the version from The Jesus Storybook Bible.
