My preschool students were back this morning after having a week off for spring break. They were all excited to see each other and were a little more energetic than usual. 🙂
After the story we made letter “Z” zebras. I told the children that each zebra has a unique striping pattern. If you notice each of their zebras has a unique striping pattern as well. 🙂
Today we started the our study of the letter “Z” by doing some zebra themed activities. I can’t believe we are at the end of the alphabet.
We began our morning by reading the book Milia’s Big Day
by Thea Feldman. My aunt and uncle got my son this book and a zebra stuffed animal at Christmas, and they were just perfect for today. This book has beautiful pictures of real zebras from the African plains. The story kept the children’s interest and I liked that there were facts on each page.

To make the zebras each child cut out a letter “Z” that I had printed from Itty Bitty Bookworms. Next, they glued their “Z’s” to a piece of construction paper. They added black stripes I had pre-cut from construction paper, a wiggly eye, an ear, a nose, and a mane (pieces of yarn). I think they turned out really cute.
Later, I taught the children this cute zebra song from Preschool Jungle. It was fun for the children to sing and they caught on quickly.
I’m a Little Zebra (Sung To: “I’m a Little Teapot”)
I’m a little zebra white and black,
With a bushy mane running down my back.
I like to gallop and run and play,
Out on the African plains all day.

I made up two zebra center activities today. The first was a set of zebra color cards. The children were to match each zebra with the correct clothespin. I color coded each word to ensure success.
If you wish to download and print the zebra color cards I created simply click on the link above.
Another zebra center activity I created was a set of zebra size sorting cards. The children were to put the cards in the correct order from smallest to largest or vice-versa. You may download and print the cards by clicking the link above.
We had a fun morning and I am looking forward to doing some zoo themed activities on Wednesday. Check back tomorrow when I will share how I made the Easter baskets the children decorated today.
