Letter S Activities

Today we finished our study of the letter “S”. This was a perfect week to talk about snow since we are getting hit with a winter storm today. When the children were waiting to be picked up we watched the snow falling. The flakes were very large and the children described the snow as cold and wet. They said that their favorite things to do in the snow are to build snowmen, throw snowballs, make snow angels, and go sledding. I hope that they all get to do those things this weekend. 🙂

Snow! Snow! Snow! Carl's Snowy Afternoon

We started our morning by reading the book Snow! Snow! Snow!. The children really liked this story about two kids and their dad going sledding. We also read Carl’s Snowy Afternoon. There really wasn’t a whole lot of reading to do in this story, but the children enjoyed the pictures. These were both nice books for a snowy morning.

After our story the children used a white crayon on black paper to make a snowy scene. The children made things like snowflakes, snowballs and snowmen. I put them in their folders (see picture below).

The children took their letter “S” folders home today. Inside their folders was a copy of their letter “S” tracing paper and mini book from First School, their “S” is for Snow letter find activity from Homeschool Share, a copy of the song Mr. Golden Sun, their snowy drawing and a sun they drew.

They had painted the outside of their folders on Wednesday using spools and salt in the hopes that they would look like snowflakes. I am not sure that is what they look like, but the children had fun with the process and that is the most important thing.

The children also traced a letter “S” template from DLTK and then used glue to trace the letter again. We sprinkled sand over the top of the glue and then shook off the excess. This paper will go in each child’s alphabet binder.

Wednesday the children made snowflakes using a pipe cleaner that had been cut into thirds. They twisted the pieces together and then I tied a piece of thread on one of the points.

I had seen the idea to make crystallized snowflakes on several sites. Each said to use a ratio of 1 cup of boiling water to 3 tablespoons of borax. So, we doubled that and put two snowflakes on a pencil and then I immersed the snowflakes into the borax water. I told the children that they would be very surprised when they see their snowflakes again on Monday.

The kids were so excited about their snowflakes on Monday morning. They were so sparkly and I was so happy it worked. 🙂

We had a great morning even though my son didn’t get to participate again. I am thankful that as of right now he seems to have turned a corner. I am hoping he will feel great when we start our study of the letter “T” on Monday. Have a great weekend.
