Uses for Eggshells & How to Use a Water Bottle to Separate Eggs

Ever since we got our new baby chicks I have been thinking about having our own eggs again.

I remember when we used to raise chickens and sell their eggs, people would tell me there was such a difference between farm fresh eggs and store bought eggs.

They were totally right.

Even though our chickens aren’t old enough to lay eggs we have been blessed recently with some farm fresh eggs. My brother’s family was given nine laying hens and they have been sharing the eggs with us.

While I love using the eggs, I have never really thought much about the shells. Normally, I just throw out/compost eggshells.

However, did you know that eggshells are an excellent source of calcium which is great for plants, especially tomatoes?

Not only are they great for tomatoes, but they can be used for a whole host of other things in the garden.

Upon further research I found out that there are many more things that can be done with eggshells like feeding them back to your chickens, using them as a source of calcium, and even putting some in with coffee grounds while brewing a cup of coffee to make it less bitter.

Needless to say, I was convinced that saving eggshells is a good thing and, after reading the following links, I bet you will start saving them, too.

Saving Eggshells

  • How to Prepare Eggshells for Reuse (via Your Thriving Family). This post shows you step by step how to remove the membranes from inside the eggshell. This is important if you plan to feed them back to your hens in place of oyster shells.
  • How to Reuse Eggshells (via Live Renewed, written by Sara of Your Thriving Family). In this post you will find 9+ ways that you can reuse eggshells, including homemade chalk. I think the kids and I will definitely have to give that a try.
  • Green Garden Prep (via Slightly Steady). This post has several ideas for green gardening. Using eggshells is number 2 on the list.
  • 30+ Things to Do with Eggshells (via the Prairie Homestead). Like the title says, there are over 30 things you can do with eggshells. Several of these ideas surprised me, especially number 6.
  • Flower Arrangements in Eggshells (via Martha Stewart). I would never have thought of using eggshells as vases, but these are gorgeous.
  • Eggshell Pendants (via Happy Hour Projects). Here is another idea I would never have thought of, applying eggshells to wooden disks to make necklaces.
  • Spring in an Egg (via Small + Friendly.) This tutorial shows how to use eggshells as seed starters.
  • A Sculpture That Tackles an Age-Old Question (via Food Republic). This link is just for fun because it has pictures of a chicken made out of eggshells. 🙂

Before I go I wanted to share one more cool thing pertaining to eggs.

Did you know that you can use an empty water bottle to separate egg yolks from the whites?

Believe it or not you can, and it is really quite easy. Here’s a short video I made to show you how it’s done.

If you are reading this via email or in a feed reader you may need to click over to view the video.

How do you separate eggs? Also, do you save eggshells?

It was a hot one, but Janna’s first cross countr It was a hot one, but Janna’s first cross country meet is in the books. It was so fun to watch her and my niece run. It brought back memories of a younger Julia running in her first cross country meet when Janna was only a few months old. It is crazy how fast the years fly by. Now she’s in fifth grade. 💕
This handsome guy turned 19 today. So many things This handsome guy turned 19 today. So many things have happened since James’s last birthday. He played his last basketball game, played golf for the first time, graduated from high school at the top of his class, completed ten years of 4-H, and started college at ISU.
I am so proud of James and all he has accomplished, but I am more proud of his work ethic, the way he treats others, and his integrity. I am so excited to see where life takes him. I know he will do great at whatever he does. Happy birthday, James. I love you!
Going back to school on a rainy Monday may not hav Going back to school on a rainy Monday may not have been ideal, but these smiling faces, along with those of my students, made it worth it. We really had a good day. Joshua is a Junior, Joseph is an 8th grader, and Janna is a 5th grader this year.
Julia had a great first day of teaching, and I am so glad. James will start at ISU next week, and I think he is excited. He will probably really enjoy this week of being home alone, though. 🙂
As usual, I am teaching some new classes this year. Some of my 9th grade students, who probably thought they wouldn’t have to deal with me anymore after having me as their teacher for two years for various subjects (sometimes twice a day), now have to deal with me for Freshman English. 😀 However, several of them seemed genuinely glad I get to be their teacher for the third year in a row. They may have just been saying that to be nice, but it made my day nonetheless. I am praying we all have a great year.
Time is a funny thing. Sometimes the minutes seem Time is a funny thing. Sometimes the minutes seem to tick by so slowly. Waiting for my first baby to make her entrance into the world seemed to take so long because I just couldn’t wait to meet her. Other times, the hours, days, months, and years have passed by at breakneck speeds. My precious baby girl grew into a woman right before my very eyes, and is now 22 year old college graduate who already has a teaching job. Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed every moment with my sweet girl, but there have been many times when I have wished I had the power to make time slow down.
Julia has accomplished so much in the past year. She finished her classes at ISU and did her student teaching. She volunteered to livestream all of her brothers’ basketball games during this past season because there were many times when we could only have two people per player attend the games. She has continued to volunteer at Our Father’s Arms, and she will be spending her evening there even though it is her birthday. She passed her tests, got her teaching license, and in two weeks time, she will be teaching English to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Carlisle.
I am so very proud of the woman Julia has become, and I am so thankful she is not only my daughter but my best friend. Happy birthday, Julia! ❤️
P.S. Julia, I’m sorry this was so sappy. I thought I was just going to write a breezy little happy birthday message, but you know how I am. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Tonight was the 4-H fashion revue. Janna is in her Tonight was the 4-H fashion revue. Janna is in her second year of sewing, and she had a lot of fun modeling the skirt she made. Julia is now the sewing superintendent, so she read the bio sheets of all of the girls who participated and announced the winners. I am so proud of both of my girls for their hard work.
We had a great time today at McCormick’s Creek S We had a great time today at McCormick’s Creek State Park. This was the first of what I hope will be many state park adventures this summer. I love these kids of mine!
Last Sunday, I wrote a really sappy post about Jam Last Sunday, I wrote a really sappy post about James. Today, I am going to keep it short. (Well, as short as this tall, long-winded mama can make it.😀) James officially graduated from North Central yesterday, and I just want to say again how very proud I am of him. I am looking forward to seeing what career path he ends up taking as he heads to ISU in the fall.
(James was this year’s valedictorian. I am biased, but I thought he did a great job on his speech.)
I also want to thank everyone who braved the cold temperatures to watch him graduate and everyone who helped us celebrate yesterday. Hosting two parties in one day on top of graduation as well as a crazy week for me as a teacher meant I was wiped out by last night. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though.
Congratulations, James! I hope you know how much I love you and how proud I am of you. ❤️
I am not one to post pictures of my kids’ report I am not one to post pictures of my kids’ report cards or brag about how well they are doing in school. I have never given my kids any kind of a reward or punishment for their grades because I have always wanted them to want to do well for their own sake, not for mine.
With that being said, I believe this guy deserves some recognition for what he has accomplished in school over the years. James is this year’s Valedictorian for North Central, and he is graduating with a 4.0. He will receive an Academic Honors Diploma as well as a Technical Honors Diploma. He is also going to graduate with several college credits. He has been a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club, and he has been voted as his class Vice President all four years. To say that I am proud of him is an understatement.
Last night, at the senior honors program, James and his fellow classmates were given awards and scholarships. It was such a good night for all of the seniors, and James has been truly blessed with the scholarships he has recieved. I am so excited to see what this next chapter holds for him. He plans to follow in the footsteps of his sister, mom, dad, and grandparents by attending Indiana State University.
This evening Julia graduated Magna Cum Laude with This evening Julia graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Education. Proud doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about all she has accomplished during her four years at ISU. The many hours spent studying, the heavy course loads (She almost always took 17 credit hours, and she had one semester when she took 23.), and the sleepless nights were rough, but they all led to this moment.
Not only has Julia graduated, but she has already accepted a teaching position at Carlisle to teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade language arts, and I know she will do a great job.
Congratulations, Julia! I love you!
