More Letter Z Activities & an Easter Party

Today we finished our study of the letter “Z”.  Here are a few final letter “Z” projects and activities.

The children got to take their letter “Z” folders home today.  They had painted them on Wednesday.  Among other things, my son drew some zigzag lines on his.

Inside each folder was a letter “Z” tracing page and mini book from First School, a zoo mini book I created, a zebra song we learned on Monday, a zebra number line, and some “Z” word cards.  You may download and print a copy of the lapbook printables I created by clicking the link below.

I also made a set of zipper number cards for a center activity this week.  You may download and print them by clicking the link above.

I threw in one last “Z” activity today.  We ate zucchini bread for a snack.

We also had an Easter party today.  Before the parents arrived for our egg hunt we did a few fun activities.

Spot's First Easter (color)   Humbug Rabbit

We read two books this morning.  The first was called Spot’s First Easter by Eric Hill.   This was a cute book about Spot and his friend finding Easter eggs.  We also read a childhood favorite of mine called Humbug Rabbit by Lorna Balian.  I got this book when I was 1 year old.  I won’t tell you the year, but it is written in the book.  🙂  My favorite thing about this book is the pictures.  The children enjoyed both of our stories.

After the stories, the children painted some hard boiled eggs with acrylic paint.  I chose to go this route because the eggs our chickens lay are brown and not great for dying.  To ensure they didn’t crack on the way home I packaged each egg inside of two egg carton cups (I cut up an egg carton.) and taped the two halves together.  I trust they made it home with no problems.

After painting, I got out the chocolate play dough I made last week.  The children thought it smelled so good, and were very tempted to eat it.  I told them it was pretty salty and they refrained from tasting it.  I had printed a set of shape papers (I wish I could remember the source.  Someone help me out if you know.) months ago and put them in sheet protectors.  They worked great with our play dough.

We also played a few games today.  First, we played a game where one person was “it” and the rest of the children held their hands in their laps while the person who was “it” tried to figure out who was hiding the egg.  Another game we played was rolling a large plastic egg from one end of the room to the other.  The children had fun with this, and I am glad I picked up a few of these eggs at a yard sale last fall.  Lastly, I divided the children in two teams and we did a spoon relay race.  I placed a plastic egg in a spoon and the kids had to walk from one spot to another and back again.  The games were just for fun and we didn’t worry about winners and losers today.

We also had an egg hunt.  I was thankful to have a couple of parents hide the eggs outside.  I was also thankful for such a beautiful day.

I had written each child’s name on 6 eggs.  They were to only find their eggs.  If they picked up one that didn’t have their name on it they were to put it right back and keep looking for their eggs.  I think this worked well and ensured that everyone got the same number of eggs with the same items in each.  (I am weird, but all of the blue eggs had quarters in them, all of the camouflage eggs had bunny finger puppets in them, etc.)

We had a great morning and I think all of the kids had fun.  We will be doing a lot of alphabet review activities next week.  I pray you all have a blessed Easter weekend.  See you Monday.
