We have had the Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set from Leap Frog for a few years. My kids always enjoy playing with the letters. Sometimes I don’t enjoy them when they get strewn all over the kitchen floor, but that is a different post. 🙂
Anyway, I wanted to share something that my 5 year old was doing with the letters a few weeks ago. He decided to make words with them.
I can’t remember what the first word was supposed to be, but the second word was “yellow”. He kept making words, and even though he didn’t get the letters all right, he did get the first letter correct. He was so proud of himself for making words and reading them to us.
This reminded me of an email that has been around for a few years in which every word is misspelled, but the first and last letter were correct. I remember being able to read the whole email with no trouble whatsoever. When my son was making these words it seemed so similar.
I am not sure that there is a point to this post. I guess I have just been thinking about the process of learning to read and how children view language and letters.
Does your preschooler put letters together to make “words”?
