Letter X Activities

Today we finished our study of the letter “X”. Here are the activities we completed this morning.

We started our morning by reading the book Fox In Socks by Dr. Seuss. This story was one of my favorites when I was a little girl. There is a question at the end of the book that asks if the reader’s tongue is numb. I have to say that after reading all of the tongue twisters in this book my tongue was definitely numb, but it was fun.

Letter X Memory Matching Game

After our story we played a memory matching game I created using words that end with the letter “X”. (You may download and print a set by clicking the link above.) The children had so much fun with this that we played it three times. I covered the cards with contact paper for durability.

Later, I got out the scrap box and allowed the children to create a masterpiece. The activity was mostly open-ended, but I did give them some suggestions for making something that involved the letter “X”. Some of the children did their own thing, but I wanted to share some of the “X” themed creations that several of the children chose to make. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of an airplane a little girl made which had an “X” as the propeller.

My son made an x-ray of his hand.

Another child made a xylophone by cutting different colored strips of paper.

This little girl made the Fox in Socks from our story today.

It never ceases to amaze me what children will create when given the chance.

The children got to take home their letter “X” folders today. They painted them on Wednesday and the only thing I asked was that they paint at least one “X” on the outside of their folder. My son chose to cover his folder with “X’s”.

Inside their folders was a copy of their letter “X” tracing paper and mini book from First School, their name, a xylophone, “The X-Ray Man Song” lyrics, and some letter “X” cards we used today. (The last three items can be downloaded and printed using the link below.) I asked the children to cut the cards apart and then circle the letter “X” in each word. Then they were to glue them to their folders in the order I instructed.

Letter X Lapbook Printables

Finally, we did a name activity as a group. I had written the letters of each child’s name on little cards. Consonants were in blue and vowels were in yellow. I set out one name at a time with the letters in random order. The child whose name was shown got to put the letters of their name in the correct order (with help if necessary). Most of the children were able to recognize their names out of order which was great.

We had a great morning and I am looking forward to planning letter “Y” activities for next week. We are almost through the alphabet! Have a great weekend.
