Last week I made a “Lego” cake for James’ birthday. I have told you before that cake decorating is not my forte. However, I am willing to give it a try for my kids.
Have you ever seen an idea or had a picture in your mind of how you wanted something to look? Then, when you actually made it the item, in this case a cake, it didn’t look like what you had hoped?
While the cakes aren’t what I had hoped they would look like, my son loved them and that is what really matters. He even picked out some Legos from his collection to accessorize the cakes.
To make the cake I baked a white cake (I used Martha’s recipe, but wasn’t overly impressed.) in two loaf pans and also made 4 cupcakes out of the batter.
When the cakes and cupcakes were cool I added a thin base layer of icing (This recipe for buttercream icing is so yummy when using real butter.) and then colored the rest of my icing. I had to use liquid food coloring because I didn’t have any of the gel kind in the colors I wanted. I think the colors would have been more vibrant if I had used the gel coloring.
Finally, I iced the loaves and cupcakes and stuck two cupcakes to each loaf. (Here’s a hint for easy removal of baked goods from loaf pans.)
These cakes were fun to make and made my son happy. I guess that means I need to get over my perfectionism when it comes to cake decorating.
Do you enjoy decorating cakes?
