Fix It Up Friday: Baby Apron Skirt Tutorial

Photobucket

Good morning! It is time for Fix It Up Friday again. I am so glad to have you join me. Thank you to all of you who linked up last week. If you are a blogger and have a creative post to link up, please do so.  I always love to see what other people create.

Last week I told you how my daughter’s 4-H projects did at the fair.  This week I am going to show you a couple of modifications I made to my easy baby skirt tutorial.  I added an apron panel to the front and a contrasting band along the bottom.

Here’s my cutie pie modeling her new skirt.  She just keeps growing so fast.
You may remember this fabric from my post about the bedding I made for Janna before she was born.  I had some leftover fabric and decided to make a skirt.
Please look at my baby skirt tutorial for more information because I am not going to show all of the steps in this tutorial.  I will just show you the modifications.

Main Fabric: 7 inches x 28 inches
Apron Fabric: 6 inches x 6 1/2 inches (2 pieces)
Trim Fabric: 3 inches x 28 inches

If you are using two pieces of fabric for the skirt because you don’t have a wide enough piece just make sure your total width equals 28 inches.

I chose three separate fabrics to make the skirt, but you could make it with just a main fabric for the skirt and a coordinating fabric for the apron panel.

Side Note:  I used my new (used) serger for parts of this project.  I have wanted a serger for nearly 11 years and finally have one.  🙂  Good things come to those who wait, I guess.  I am excited to see how this enhances my sewing.  I had fun using it for this project.

Since I had to use two skirt panels I serged them together and then added my trim fabric to the bottom with right sides together.  Then I serged the bottom edge.

I folded the bottom of the trim up towards the skirt 1/2 inch and pressed it.
Then, I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance to stitch the hem in place.
You could use a wider piece of trim fabric, fold it in half, and stitch it to the skirt panel.  This would eliminate the need to hem the skirt.

To make the apron panel I serged the two 6 inch x 6 1/2 inch pieces of fabric together on three sides.  I left one 6 inch side open for turning.
I turned the apron panel right side out and pressed it.

Next, I basted the apron panel to the front of the skirt, lining up the top edges of the fabrics, 4 inches from the left side of the fabric.  If you are using one piece of fabric for the skirt panel instead of two then center the apron in the middle of the fabric so that the seam is at the back of the skirt.
Since I was using two pieces I wanted my two seams to be on the sides.  I think I should have placed the apron about 4 1/2 inches from the left side, though.
To finish the skirt you will need to follow my tutorial for how to add fold over elastic to the waistband and then sew the skirt together.
Alternatively, you could add an extra couple of inches to the width of the skirt fabric to make a casing for elastic.
I really like the skirt better than a onesie dress because my baby sometimes has diaper blow-outs and has to have her onesie changed.  By using a skirt over the top, I could change her onesie and she could still wear the skirt.  🙂

Now it’s your turn to link up your creative post.  I look forward to seeing all of your great ideas.  The guidelines for linking up are here.
