Easy Valance Tutorial

In mid-August we had new windows installed in our living room. I decided that I wanted to just have a simple valance at the top of the windows instead of the heavy drapes I had previously used. The windows were just too pretty to cover up. So, I picked out some fabric and set to work sewing valances.

One of the first things I sewed as a newly married woman were valances, and I think they are one of the easiest projects you can sew that can make a big change to any room.

Today I am going to show you how I make valances so that, even if you have limited sewing skills, you can make some, too.

Supplies

  • Fabric
  • Scissors and/or Rotary Cutter
  • Ruler
  • Thread
  • Iron
  • Sewing Machine

To determine the amount of fabric you need you will need to measure the width of your windows and then determine how full you want your your gathers to be. The more fabric you use in the width of your valance the more gathers you will have.

My rule of thumb is to take the width of my window and then cut my fabric to a width that is 1 1/2 times that measurement. Howecer, sometimes I have used a heavy upholstery fabric and made my valances with no gathers by adding only enough width to the fabric to accommodate turning the edges under.

For my living room windows, I made 4 panels because my windows are very wide. I decided that I didn’t want to make one long curtain because the middle needed to be open to accommodate the hook in the middle of the curtain rod that keeps it from bowing.

Since the fabric was striped I cut each panel the width of the fabric (45 inches) by 18 inches. Cutting the valances to a height of 18 inches allowed me to make the curtain rod pocket and hem the fabric without having super short valances.

If this isn’t clear enough please let me know if you need help figuring up how much fabric you need.

Instructions

1. Cut your fabric. As I mentioned above, 18 inches is a good height, and 1 1/2 times the width of your window is a good width for making valances.

2. Overcast (zig-zag stitch) or serge all 4 edges of the fabric. If you use a serger try not to cut much off while you are edging the fabric.

3. Press 1/2 inch of the fabric on both short sides towards the wrong side.

4. Sew the sides in place using a 1/4 or even a 3/8 inch seam allowance.

5. Press the top 3 inches of the fabric towards the wrong side.

(No picture for the next 2 steps.)

6. Sew right along the edge you overcast in Step 2.

7. Sew another seam parallel the the seam you sewed in Step 6. Make the seam 1 1/2 inches (Towards the folded edge.) from the line of stitching you just made in Step 6.

You have just made the pocket that the curtain rod will go through.

8. Press 1 inch of fabric at the bottom towards the wrong side.

9. Sew the hem in place using a 5/8 seam allowance.

This is what your valance should look like from the back side if you have followed all of the steps. I recommend pressing the valance before hanging it up with a curtain rod.

This is the front view when all of the seams have been sewn in place. You will insert the curtain rod between the two lines of stitching which will give you some fabric above the curtain rod.

Here’s a picture of my window with my new valances. My husband said that the stripes make him think of a barber shop, in a good way. I guess that means he likes them.? 🙂

Have you ever made valances? Did you use a similar method? Please let me know if you have any questions.

Update: I had someone ask in the comments about making a valance that doesn’t have gathers. I have done that before and will briefly try to explain what I did.

Valance from Upholstery Fabric

I used an upholstery fabric to make the valances in my dining room. I knew the fabric wouldn’t lend itself to gathers so I simply made the valance a few inches wider than the window, and followed the tutorial above.

This handsome boy of mine is turning 17 years old This handsome boy of mine is turning 17 years old today. It doesn’t seem possible that my little 6 lbs. 13 oz. baby who was just 20 inches long is now a big, strong 6’4” high school junior. Joshua is such a kind, caring, hard-working, smart, and talented young man. This year, all of his classes are for college credit, and he is doing a great job with no help from us. He tried a new sport this spring when he and James played golf for North Central. Joshua has also taught himself how to do video special effects and seems to have a real talent for it as well as other computer-related tasks.
I am so proud of Joshua, and I am thankful to be his mama. I know it can’t have always been easy to be the middle child of five who has food allergies, but I think Joshua handles it very well. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him. Happy birthday, Joshua!
After spending the day on the Wabash River with Jo After spending the day on the Wabash River with Joseph and the rest of my 8th graders on the annual raft trip, I had to quickly get cleaned up to go to Janna’s Beta induction. This mama is tired but super proud of my youngest two. 💕

I am so proud of the young man he has become, and I think it is great he was chosen by his peers to represent his class. I think he had fun, but I know he is glad to be done smiling for pictures. 😀 It was fun to get to see all of my current and former students all dressed up. Also, It doesn’t seem possible that it was over 30 years ago that I was a junior on the homecoming court, too.

It brought back memories of a younger Julia running in her first cross country meet when Janna was only a few months old. It is crazy how fast the years fly by. Now she’s in fifth grade. 💕
This handsome guy turned 19 today. So many things This handsome guy turned 19 today. So many things have happened since James’s last birthday. He played his last basketball game, played golf for the first time, graduated from high school at the top of his class, completed ten years of 4-H, and started college at ISU.
I am so proud of James and all he has accomplished, but I am more proud of his work ethic, the way he treats others, and his integrity. I am so excited to see where life takes him. I know he will do great at whatever he does. Happy birthday, James. I love you!
Going back to school on a rainy Monday may not hav Going back to school on a rainy Monday may not have been ideal, but these smiling faces, along with those of my students, made it worth it. We really had a good day. Joshua is a Junior, Joseph is an 8th grader, and Janna is a 5th grader this year.
Julia had a great first day of teaching, and I am so glad. James will start at ISU next week, and I think he is excited. He will probably really enjoy this week of being home alone, though. 🙂
As usual, I am teaching some new classes this year. Some of my 9th grade students, who probably thought they wouldn’t have to deal with me anymore after having me as their teacher for two years for various subjects (sometimes twice a day), now have to deal with me for Freshman English. 😀 However, several of them seemed genuinely glad I get to be their teacher for the third year in a row. They may have just been saying that to be nice, but it made my day nonetheless. I am praying we all have a great year.
Time is a funny thing. Sometimes the minutes seem Time is a funny thing. Sometimes the minutes seem to tick by so slowly. Waiting for my first baby to make her entrance into the world seemed to take so long because I just couldn’t wait to meet her. Other times, the hours, days, months, and years have passed by at breakneck speeds. My precious baby girl grew into a woman right before my very eyes, and is now 22 year old college graduate who already has a teaching job. Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed every moment with my sweet girl, but there have been many times when I have wished I had the power to make time slow down.
Julia has accomplished so much in the past year. She finished her classes at ISU and did her student teaching. She volunteered to livestream all of her brothers’ basketball games during this past season because there were many times when we could only have two people per player attend the games. She has continued to volunteer at Our Father’s Arms, and she will be spending her evening there even though it is her birthday. She passed her tests, got her teaching license, and in two weeks time, she will be teaching English to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Carlisle.
I am so very proud of the woman Julia has become, and I am so thankful she is not only my daughter but my best friend. Happy birthday, Julia! ❤️
P.S. Julia, I’m sorry this was so sappy. I thought I was just going to write a breezy little happy birthday message, but you know how I am. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Julia is now the sewing superintendent, so she read the bio sheets of all of the girls who participated and announced the winners. I am so proud of both of my girls for their hard work.
