This weekend I made crayon rolls for my children for Christmas. These are very popular and there are many tutorials available. I chose to use UK Lass in US’s Lazy Crayon Roll Tutorial. It wasn’t the “lazy” part that made me want to try it, but it was the fact that the stitching lines would be hidden. I was intrigued, plus I had used her fabric doll house tutorial last year with success.
So, I cut out all of my fabric using the measurements she gave for a 24 pack of crayons since I had a stockpile of crayons I had gotten for around a quarter each. The first two went well except for the fact that either my measurements were off or hers were because I had an extra inch of length to cut off after stitching the crayon pockets. No big deal because it was an easy fix. I decided to use a 7 inch piece of elastic instead of the hair band and button called for in the tutorial and found that it worked well. The finished products are the football and purple crayon rolls in the top picture which will be for my oldest two children.
I decided to use 8 large crayons for my two youngest children. So, I cut the fabric at 10 inches wide, but somehow messed up when determining the height. I was 1/2 an inch too short, but decided to make it work. I think they will be fine even though the crayons come right to the top. I again used a piece of elastic, but it was only 5 inches long. I tried shaking the crayon rolls to see if the crayons would fall out and was pleased that they were quite snug and didn’t budge. That is a must with little ones who tend to be rough. 🙂
While these didn’t go exactly as planned I am pleased with the end result. I liked the tutorial and they stitched up fairly quickly. I think my children will like them, and they will be great for coloring on the go.
