{Ask the Readers} Teaching Preschool

February 24, 2012 By Jackie Leave a Comment

I thought it might be fun to ask you a few questions today instead of telling you something or sharing an activity.

This year I have not been teaching preschool due to having a baby last year.  I have been feeling led to possibly start it up again in the fall.  I am thinking about using a different area of my home and even changing my methods somewhat.

Here’s where I could use some help from you.  I would love some input from those of you who are teaching preschoolers either your own or other people’s children.  I would love to have you answer any or all of the questions you can.

  1. Do you teach preschool in your home or in a facility?
  2. Do you have a specific style of teaching you use?  Ex. Montessori, Waldorf, Play Based, Academic (public school style), etc.?
  3. If you teach preschool to other children besides, or in addition to, your own what advice would you give to someone wanting to start a preschool?
If you have any other thoughts about teaching preschool besides what I have asked I would love to hear from you.  I look forward to hearing from you.

I operate out of my home. Over 23 years I have done my own with others, just others, developmental preschool, before/after school and mixed ages child care. Wanting a full income I have settled on year-round mixed ages child care and love it. I offer a non-structured preschool as part of the childcare - through play and child interest we get everything done, so the children are ready for K, but have the flexibility needed with little ones in the house. You can see what I do from my blog - countryfun.edublogs.org.

Thank you so much for sharing. I am always interested in hearing from those who teach young children. It sounds like you have a lot of experience. Thanks for pointing me to your blog. I will definitely be stopping by to check it out.

I am teaching preschool to my son, who is two and a half. I have a daughter Janna’s age, and so I am having a really flexible preschool schedule. But each day, I do something intentional with him for an hour that is more formal than just our everyday interactions. I have thought about taking in a few other kids because what I do I think is worthwhile and somewhat fantastic, and I’d like to have the materials I create be used more than once. The income would be nice, too. BUT - I chose to stay at home, so I don’t know that I’d like having my flexible life interfered with right now.

It sounds like you are doing a great job with your son. I understand your points. I do need the income, though. I only teach preschool for a total of 7 1/2 hours per week (M, W, F for 2 1/2 hours), so it isn’t as big of a disruption as if I were doing every day either half or all day. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
