We rarely eat at restaurants. For one, the closest restaurants are 15 minutes away. Two, we have a family of 7, so eating out can be expensive. Three, since Joshua has food allergies (dairy, wheat, egg whites, soy) it isn’t always easy to find someplace that he can eat. Those are the reasons why I have had to learn to enjoy cooking.
One of our favorite, kid-pleasing meals is taco night. My husband says we need to have “Taco Tuesday” every week. :) I don’t fix tacos every week, but I do try to serve them at least every other week.
We like hard taco shells the best. The great thing about them is that they are gluten-free so Joshua can enjoy them, too. Some toppings we enjoy are shredded cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, salsa, and sour cream.
To make tacos I usually use 2 pounds of browned burger (We mostly use ground venison.) and either my homemade seasoning mix (See recipe below) or salsa. I usually serve tacos with refried beans, chips and guacamole (although not everyone likes it) and fruit.
Taco night is not only a crowd pleaser, but it also is a frugal meal. I have never figured out the exact cost, but I do know that we can feed our family of 7, 6 of whom eat tacos, for less than $10 and have some left over.
Does your family like tacos? What do you serve with them?
