I recently stumbled across a fun idea at Johnny in a Dress for using felt to make an interactive Christmas tree for the kids. Since my 19 month old daughter is trying to redecorate our real tree, I thought this would be a perfect idea for some toddler fun.
Making a Christmas tree and ornaments out of felt was a very easy and frugal project. I used felt and trims from my stash so it was technically free.
If you want to know how I made this no-sew felt Christmas tree, here are my instructions.
Supplies
- Felt (assorted colors and sizes)
- Trims (ric-rac)
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun (affiliate link)
Instructions
1. Take a piece of green felt (I used a piece that was 27 inches by 17 inches) and fold it in half lengthwise.
2. Cut along the diagonal from the bottom right to the top left. Make sure you come to a point at the end so that you have a folded triangle.
The long diagonal side of the triangle should be 29 inches.
3. Unfold the green felt and you should now have a triangle that is 29 inches by 29 inches by 17 inches.
You can make your tree whatever size you choose, but this size is really nice for the toddler/preschooler crowd.
4. Cut a tree trunk out of brown felt that is 5 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches.
5. Hot glue the brown felt rectangle to the back of the green triangle, centered at the bottom, so that all but an inch or two is showing.
6. Hot glue ric-rac to the tree like you would a strand of lights. (I prefer to use a fine tip hot glue gun for detail work like this. affiliate link)
7. Cut out a star from some yellow felt and hot glue it to the top of the tree.
This is what your tree should look like after completing the first 7 steps.
8. Make ornaments, lights, presents, or whatever you want for your tree out of felt. This is the time to get creative.
I chose to make 6 circle ornaments and 10 lightbulbs.
You really don’t have to be perfect with any of this. Just have fun making it and realize that your little one is going to love it even if it isn’t ready for the cover of a magazine. 🙂
My toddler and preschooler have had a lot of fun with this tree the past couple of days. I can’t say that it has made my little girl quit messing with the real tree, but it is nice to have an alternative to distract her with.
