Today we continued our study of the letter “K” by learning about koalas. We started our morning by reading the book Marsupial Sue
by John Lithgow. This rhyming story was about a kangaroo who didn’t want to be a kangaroo any more. In the end she realized she should be happy with who she is. In addition to kangaroos there were also koalas and other Australian animals in the book.
After our story the children made koalas out of lower case letter “k’s”. First, the children colored and cut out a lower case “k”. Then they glued a gray oval to a piece of construction paper. Next, they glued the “k” to the paper and added a tail, wiggly eyes, and a marker nose/mouth. I got this idea from Totally Tots.
Later, the children made koala masks by coloring a paper plate with a gray crayon. They glued on a black nose and drew a mouth. I stapled gray ears and a piece of elastic to the back to complete the masks. The children enjoyed pretending to be koalas as we acted out the following rhyme from Everything Preschool.
Koala Bear
Koala bear, koala bear, Turn around, (Turn around)
Koala bear, koala bear, Touch the ground (Touch the ground)
Koala bear, koala bear, Dance on your toes, (Dance on tip toes)
Koala bear, koala bear, Touch your nose (Touch your nose)
Koala bear, koala bear, Give a little clap, (clap)
Koala bear, koala bear, Take a nap (Put head on hands like sleeping)
Koala bear, koala bear, Touch the ground (Touch the ground)
Koala bear, koala bear, Dance on your toes, (Dance on tip toes)
Koala bear, koala bear, Touch your nose (Touch your nose)
Koala bear, koala bear, Give a little clap, (clap)
Koala bear, koala bear, Take a nap (Put head on hands like sleeping)
Finally, the children completed this koala counting worksheet I created. It doesn’t look quite right in the picture above for some reason. Anyway, I had the children practice writing some numbers on the bottom lines. You may download and print a copy by clicking here.
We had a great morning. The children will be back on Friday when we will finish our study of the letter “K”.
