Fabric Casserole Carriers and a Tutorial

December 2, 2010 By Jackie 12 Comments

I asked my husband to stop at Walmart on his way to work a few weeks ago to see how much 9″ x 13″ casserole dishes were. I needed more than what I had in order to make all of the side dishes I was planning to cook for Thanksgiving. He found a great deal on a 9″ x 13″ Pyrex with a lid that also included a 7″ x 11″ dish with a lid all for $11. He purchased several, and so an idea was born.

Why couldn’t I make fabric casserole carriers for the 7″ x 11″ inch dishes and give them as Christmas gifts? I remembered that my husband’s aunt had given me a pattern for a casserole carrier, but I didn’t have enough fabric to make them. I had some fat quarters and fleece in my stash, so I went to work making a new pattern instead of heading to the store. After three tries I finally perfected the pattern enough to share it with you as a free tutorial.

Here is the finished casserole carrier complete with a spoon pocket just big enough for a 10 inch wooden spoon.

You can see that the casserole dish slides into the carrier and then ties shut. I intend to fill each casserole dish with some goodies before wrapping it. I think that will make the gift even better, don’t you?

I am offering the tutorial as a PDF download because there are several steps and pictures. Plus, I like to be able to print tutorials easily and this is a good way to give you that option. You may download and print a copy of the tutorial by clicking the link below the picture.

Casserole Carrier Tutorial

I did want to say that I am happy to allow you to make items for sale from my tutorials. However, you are not allowed to sell or post my tutorial on another site. You are welcome to link to this page and the tutorial though.

I thought I would share my first two tries at making this tutorial. The carriers are both functional and will serve their purpose just fine. They just needed a little tweaking.

This carrier is slightly longer than the others and has one handle in the middle instead of two. It was my first idea.

This carrier is identical to the one I wrote the tutorial for with the only difference being the length of the handles. They are just a little shorter, but still work.

I had fun designing this casserole carrier and hope the recipients have fun using them. If you make one of these I would love to hear from you.

Awesome project, thanks for sharing! I think it would be fun to make for friends for Christmas and include the dish and wooden spoon, maybe even a favorite casserole recipe. :) Can’t wait to get started!

Thank you so much! I gave the recipients some goodies in the casserole dishes. They loved them. Let me know if you make one.

too cute! I was thinking of doing etched casserole dishes for Christmas…so this would be a perfect addition!

Thanks, Elizabeth! That sounds like a great idea. I have never etched glass, but I think it would be a great way to ensure the dish gets back to you. :)

I love this! I see how you did different things with the handles what if you did an X handle (top right to bottom left, top left to bottom right) so that your carrying it in the middle and it would help add a little more stability for heavy casseroles or jiggly desserts… :)

Oh, Chrystle, I think your idea sounds really cool. Thanks so much. I will have to give it a try and update this post accordingly when I do.

Hello Ms. Jackie I made your one large handled hot dish carrier the only thing I Chris changed was I added a flap and a large snap to keep it closed. I have been given many compliments on it. Thank you so much for posting this.

Thank you so much, Maranda! I love your idea of making a flap and using a snap instead of the ties. Great idea! I’m glad you and others like it. :)
