Fix It Up Friday: Toddler Girls Skirt Tutorial

Good morning! It is time for Fix It Up Friday again. I am so glad to have you join me. Thank you to all of you who linked up last week. If you didn’t get to check out all of the cool ideas that were shared click here.

I wanted to let you know that if you link up a post I will share it on my Facebook page. If you don’t “like” me already I would encourage you to do so.  :-)

Last Friday I showed you how to turn pants into shorts.  Well, today I am going to show you what I did with the extra fabric from one of the pairs of pants.
I turned it into a toddler girls skirt!
The materials I used were the extra pieces from the bottom of the pants, 1 inch elastic, thread, pins, and my sewing machine.

First, I cut the pant legs open and cut off one of the seams on each piece of fabric. Then I measured and cut each piece to a length of 12 inches and a width of 15 inches.
*Do not cut the bottom to get the correct height of the fabric.  This will allow you to use the hem of the pants as the hem of your skirt.

Next, I lined up the two pieces and pinned them together at the sides, right sides together.  I stitched along each side using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.  I did zig-zag the raw edges to prevent fraying.

Then I made the casing for the elastic.  I measured 1/2 inch along the top of the skirt and pressed the fabric down with an iron.
The skirt should still be wrong side out at this point.

Then I folded the fabric down another 1 1/2 inches and pressed the fabric.  I also pinned the casing in place.

I stitched close to the open edge of the fold being sure to leave a two inch opening to thread the elastic through.

I cut an 18 inch piece of 1″ elastic and attached a safety pin to it.  Then I threaded it through the opening in the casing.

When I had the elastic threaded all the way through the casing I made sure that the elastic didn’t get twisted.  Then I stitched the two ends of the elastic together by sewing a couple of rows of zig-zag stitches.

Finally, I stitched the opening of the casing closed and turned the skirt right side out.
The skirt had a finished length of 10 inches.  I think this skirt would fit a little girl anywhere from size 12 months to 24 months.  I am expecting it to fit my baby this coming winter.

While I made this skirt out of the bottoms of two pant legs, it could easily be adapted for any fabric as long as you make it long enough to hem the bottom of the fabric.

Now, it is your turn to link up your creative posts. I look forward to seeing all of your great ideas. The guidelines for linking up are here.
