Today we continued our study of the letter “Y” by doing some yellow activities.
First, we read the book Bones and the Big Yellow Mystery by David A. Adler. The story is about a boy named Jeffrey Bones. While he is shopping with his grandpa a bus driver asks him to help solve the mystery of where his bus disappeared to. In the end, Bones solves the mystery of the big, yellow bus.
Next, we recited a cute finger play I found at Preschool Education. I cut out 5 yellow circles and numbered them to serve as visual aids for the song.
Five Yellow Polka Dots
Five yellow polka dots lay on the floor,
One sat up and then there were four.
Four yellow polka dots got on their knees,
One tipped over and then there were three.
Three yellow polka dots stood on one shoe,
One fell down and then there were two.
Two yellow polka dots started to run,
One stopped quickly and then there was one.
One yellow polka dot rolled toward the door,
When it disappeared there were no more.
I created this yellow worksheet for color recognition and visual discrimination practice. The children were to circle the yellow object in each row. (You may download and print a copy by clicking the link above.)
Since Wednesday is our painting day I gave the children some yellow paint and let them paint whatever they wanted on their folders. (I will share more about those on Friday.)
The children also used yellow paint to fill in the letters on their “Y” paper from DLTK. These papers will go in each child’s alphabet binder.
We finished our morning by making shamrock Shriky Dinks . I saw the idea for these on No Time for Flashcards. I traced a shamrock shape on the the Shriky Dinks film. Then I cut them out and wrote each child’s name on them. They colored them with green colored pencils and then we placed them in the oven on a paper bag lined cookie sheet. We set the timer for one minute and then checked on them. We did this several times until they were done.
When they were finished we threaded yellow yarn (I had to throw our letter of the week in there somehow.) through a hole I had punched in the top prior to shrinking them. They were a fun project, plus we got to do a little learning about time while we were waiting.
We had a great day and will finish our study of the letter “Y” on Friday.
