Week 5: Clean the Kitchen Before Bed.

It’s a new week and that means it is time to share what my new goal will be this week. (If you are just joining us you may want to check out what this 11 week journey is all about.) So far, all of the goals have been personal. Now we are ready to start working on goals for our homes.

When I think back on all of my years of being a wife one of the household tasks that I seem to be the worst at is keeping my kitchen clean. I cook a lot. I have young children. I have other things I enjoy doing besides cleaning.

Obviously, I have a lot of excuses and, since I am not Rachel Ray who always used to say that the cook didn’t have to do the dishes, I don’t have a staff to clean up after I finish cooking.

Unless you eat out all of the time you probably have made your kitchen messy a time or two. While messy kitchens and cooking for a family can go hand in hand, it isn’t cool if this is what your kitchen looks like when you wake up in the morning.

This was how my kitchen looked a few months ago when I woke up. I wish I could say it was an isolated incident, but it wasn’t. Cleaning before you eat breakfast is no fun.

Why does this happen? Well, I have been guilty of falling asleep in the chair while getting a baby to sleep and not waking back up to clean up the kitchen. I have even gone to bed and left a mess like this on purpose because I just didn’t feel like dealing with it.

There, you now know one of my major housekeeping faults. So, what am I going to do about it?

This week I plan to take control of my messy kitchen. I will become disciplined through prayer and hard work so that I don’t wake up to a dirty kitchen anymore.

Since the mess happens throughout the day, I need to keep on top of loading and unloading the dishwasher as well as do any hand washing and not let everything wait until the kids are in bed.

I am looking forward to waking up to a clean kitchen every morning. Tonight I am already on top of this goal. I just have one cup that needs to go into the dishwasher and then I will start it and go to bed. When I wake up my kitchen will be clean. Yay!

Is this an area of home management that you need to work on, or am I the only one who has this problem?

If you are like me I just want to encourage you to try this week’s goal with me. I will try to post on Facebook each night before I got to bed to let you know whether my kitchen is clean or not.

I have one other goal for you this week. Last week I encouraged you to drink one (8 ounce) glass of water each day. This week I would like to encourage you to drink two glasses so that we can gradually work up to drinking 8 glasses of water each day.

To help keep us on track I have made a printable checklist that you can download and print by clicking the picture below.

I am looking forward to making this week’s goal into a habit. How about you?

That is what I just got done doing- cleaning up the kitchen. 🙂 This has been something that I have struggled with too as I also do a lot of cooking, have a somewhat big family and have other things that I am more interested in doing. I tried making a goal quite some time ago that I would have all the dishes done before going to bed and that I couldn’t blog if the dishes weren’t washed however I had trouble sticking with that. I was tired at the end of the day and really felt the need to have some relaxing time - not work on cleaning the kitchen just so I could finally relax or go to bed. The last couple of weeks our family has been working on something new and that was that with every dish that becomes dirty if you were the one that dirtied it (or ate the last piece of cake from the pan, or are in charge of clearing the table or are the one that baked) then you are in charge of either putting those dishes in the dishwasher or washing them if the dishwasher won’t work for them.
This system has actually worked pretty well. I really don’t mind washing dishes so much when it is just a few at a time on not some overwhelming stack and me kids seem to feel the same way. Ken hasn’t quite joined in on the challange but he has been trying to put them in the dishwasher a bit more often and I don’t mind doing his anyway. We have been doing this 2 or 3 weeks now and I think we are developing habits which I am very excited about! We did have a little challange with the system today as my sister and family (6 of them plus of course 6 of us) where here for the weekend and this morning we cooked breakfast for everybody and got a bunch of food ready for fellowship dinner and then had a busy afternoon too and that I why I did have a bit of a stack to wash tonight but I plan on being back on track with the system now.
I hope your goal goes well too!

Abbi, I am glad to know I’m not the only one with this problem. Thank you so much for sharing what is working for you, and I am glad your family is jumping on the bandwagon. Maybe someone reading this post will read the comments and find encouragement in what you shared. I always enjoy knowing what works for you since our families are fairly similar in age and size. Take care and I hope you find success in keeping your kitchen clean. 🙂

I hate having a messy kitchen, but it does seem lately that’s just what I end up with all day. The older kids have the responsibility of dinner dishes, but one of them also has to put dishes away. When she doesn’t do it in the morning, the kitchen is a wreck by supper. I can’t fix supper in a messy kitchen, so dinner is held off while I clean. I rarely go to bed with a messy kitchen, but I often have to push the kids to get the dishes done.

      I totally understand, Rachel. 🙂

The kitchen is right up there with laundry as being the bane of my existence!!! Our dishwasher has been broken for five months now and so washing three loads a day by hand is not so appealing. More often than not, I leave it for the next day. 😛 Which does not start off my day well.
We just bought another dishwasher and it will be here in two weeks!!! Happy dancing now! If I can get this habit established before then, it will be a snap to keep my kitchen clean! 😉

I feel your pain. 🙂 Being without a dishwasher is definitely no fun. I am doing the happy dance with you about getting a new one. I hope you can make this goal a habit.
