We had a lot of fun this morning as we wrapped up our study of the letter “V”, and had our own mini Olympics. Check out all of the fun we had.
We started our morning by reading the book The Magic School Bus Blows Its Top: A Book About Volcanoes (Magic School Bus) by Gail Herman. The children listened really well to this story even though it was longer than many we have read. Who can resist a school bus full of kids who can go inside a volcano? 🙂 It was a fun way for the children to learn more about volcanoes.
After our story the children helped me make our own volcano. They took turns putting play dough around a glass pop bottle. Then they each got to put an ingredient into the bottle. The last ingredient was vinegar and then it exploded. They loved it so much we did it a second time. I am glad we had a pan underneath because it was a little messy. But, messy is usually fun, right?
- 3 Drops Dishwashing Liquid
- 1/2 Cup Water
- 4 Tbsp. Baking Soda
- 3 Drops Red Food Coloring
- 1/2 Cup Vinegar
Using a funnel, place all ingredients, except the vinegar, into a bottle. Add the vinegar and watch your volcano erupt.
The children took their letter “V” folders home today. They had painted them with Velcro on Wednesday.
Inside each folder was a letter “V” tracing paper and mini book from First School, a piece of velvet and Velcro, a set of volcano order cards from this site, a vase coloring page and a volcano each child drew.
Later in our morning we had our own version of the Olymics. The children had so much fun. We had events like…
…a bobsled race using a large cardboard tube that I cut in half and two cars (idea from Make & Takes)…
…a snowball toss game using cotton balls and pipe cleaner (I realize there is no white Olympic ring, but I was out of black pipe cleaners.) Olympic rings (idea from Make & Takes)…
…and a figure skating competition. I drew the Olympic rings on a piece of paper and put it in a cake pan. I added water and froze the pan. (idea from Silly Eagle Books) The children used our Little People to pretend to skate. I must say that there were some amazing jumps in this event. Too bad we didn’t have a Zamboni.
We ended our morning with a medals ceremony. To make the medals I hot glued a piece of red, white and blue ribbon to the back of a juice bottle lid. Then I added a large gold sticker to the front. This idea was based on one from Silly Eagle Books; however, I didn’t have any gold glitter. So, I went with materials I had on hand.
We had such a fun morning and everyone was very excited. I was asked by one child, “Where do you come up with these ideas?” If they only knew the hours I put into planning. I love it, though.
We will start our study of the letter “W” on Monday. Have a great weekend!
