Does your toddler like to play with his or her food and smear it around the high chair tray? My little girl does and it is a often sign to me that she is finished or bored. 🙂
One day last week I decided to turn her love of playing with her food into an art project. A little food coloring was all we needed to turn plain old yogurt into paint.
The items we used were a bowl, spoon, yogurt, food coloring, and freezer paper. I love to use freezer paper for painting projects because the back of it is coated and paint doesn’t leak through.
I decided to make two different colors so I used 1 Tablespoon of yogurt and 1 drop of food coloring per color.
One drop of food coloring was plenty, I thought.
I put a little of each color on my daughter’s freezer paper lined high chair. However, you can simply let your toddler paint right on the tray. I wanted to keep my daughter’s artwork so that is why I used the paper.
My little girl wasn’t sure what to do at first, so I swirled a little of the “paint” around and she caught on. She even decided to paint her hands and wrists. 🙂
After a while I gave my daughter a basting brush and she seemed to like painting with it as much as with her fingers.
Yogurt painting was a very fun project for my little one. The nice thing about using food for paint is that if your toddler still puts things in his or her mouth, you won’t have to worry about a mouthful of paint.
However, I told my little girl that the paint was yucky when she tried to taste it so that she doesn’t think she can eat paint when I give her the real thing.
Have you ever given your child food to paint with?
