I haven’t posted a garden update for a few weeks because, quite frankly, my garden has looked pretty embarrassing.
Here is what my garden looked like two weeks ago.
The weeds have taken over and it even looked worse than that before my mom came over this afternoon to help me. I took a sickle to the weeds and so did my mom. She pulled the green bean plants that were dying as well. Here is what the garden looks like now.
Perfect? Far from it. More manageable? Yes! I might actually be able to find the tomatoes. Speaking of tomatoes…
We have tomatoes!!! Bring on the salsa and spaghetti sauce!
We picked another row of corn about two weeks ago. We ate lots of it and then I froze the rest off the cob. My last row of corn doesn’t look like it will amount to anything, but at least we have enjoyed some sweet corn.
The blackberries were loaded this year. I made a couple of batches of jam, and I froze some of the (unsweetened) juice in ice cube trays to use in smoothies.
We have also harvested two pumpkins. These came from a plant that I almost pulled up a few months ago because the stem was broken. Who would have thought?
We have been blessed with lots of wonderful produce in spite of the sad state of my garden and for that I am very thankful.
I do have a question for those of you who grow regular potatoes. How do you know when they are ready to harvest? I think mine might be close, if not ready.
Does your garden look as sad as mine, or are you much better about taming those pesky weeds than I am?
