We have already read three of the books on our summer reading list, but I have only posted about one of them so far, Stuart Little.
Well, today I wanted to share our thoughts on the book The Sign of the Beaver
My 3 older kids loved this book, especially my ten year old son. My two year old is too little to understand everything I read, but she did listen quietly which was great.
The book is about a boy, Matt, who is left to take care of the family’s new homestead while his father goes back to their old home to get the rest of the family.
Matt meets some Indians and learns many useful skills that help him survive in the wilderness.
When his family takes much longer than expected to return, Matt has to make a tough decision as to whether he will stay or go with his new Indian friends for the winter.
Ultimately, Matt decides to stay and is rewarded by being reunited with his family in the end.
There are so many things that Matt learned and I had a difficult time deciding upon an activity for my kids to do. I finally settled on an activity that went with the title of the book.
We decided to carve a sign into a tree on our property. In the book Matt learned that each Indian tribe had a sign that they carved into trees to show their hunting ground boundaries.
I decided that we should come up with a sign for our family.
My kids came up with lots of different ideas and, as you can see, even my two year old tried her hand at coming up with a sign.
We ultimately decided to carve the deer my 10 year old designed into a tree because we have lots of deer on our property.
We also carved our last initial into the tree.
Since I really wasn’t too sure about letting some of the younger kids use a pocket knife we opted for an ice pick to do the carving.
The kids found it to be quite tricky to make a design in the tree, but they had a lot of fun trying.
I think it is safe to say that my kids would highly recommend The Sign of the Beaver
