We finished Charlotte’s Web last week as part of our summer reading. My children loved this book. They each had a different favorite character. We looked forward to reading a chapter or two each night. What’s not to love about a farm with animals that talk?
When I was a young girl my dad was a hog farmer. Because of that, I have always been able to relate to Fern and have a soft spot in my heart for piglets. One winter we even had to bring the babies inside while our power was out. I was literally in “hog heaven”. 😉
My mom has told me that she used to put me with the piglets sometimes (They could go from one side to another but their mom’s couldn’t. This prevented me from being crushed by the mama. ) when they needed to scrape out the pens.
Yes, I have fond memories of farm life. Unfortunately, my children won’t have those memories. We used to raise chickens but haven’t for several years now. Maybe someday we will have a couple of animals other than cats and dogs. But, I digress. For now, I will just have to tell them the stories about the animals we raised when I was a girl.
Since I like to do an activity with each of the books, for Charlotte’s Web we decided to observe spiders while we were outside recently. They really are fascinating. Check out the one we found in the garden after I had been watering the plants.
It is amazing how intricate their webs are.
We enjoyed watching this spider but decided we like them better outside than we do inside.
Have you read Charlotte’s Web? Which animal is your favorite?
