Today we took a little drive and visited my husband at his (relatively) new office. We were going to have lunch with him, which we did, but we first decided to walk about two blocks away from his office to some historic landmarks. This trip allowed me to check “visit a local historical museum” off of our summer bucket list.
This impressive structure is the George Rogers Clark Memorial. When I was a teacher and taught fourth grade I took field trips to this and a few other historical landmarks in the same town. It has been quite a few years since I have been to this town and it always amazes me just how much history there is within an hour of my home.
We each got to wear a set of headphones and listen to information about all of the large paintings in the memorial. It was a great history lesson that didn’t cost me anything but a small donation.
The lady that was working in the memorial was sweet enough to take our picture. She wanted to be sure that she got just the right angle. 🙂
We walked around the outside of the memorial and took a little rest to look out at the river.
As we looked around outside it was hard to imagine a fort standing there and a Revolutionary War battle raging.
We walked a little farther and entered another building which had some historical items as well as a 1/2 hour movie which visually depicted the story of how George Rogers Clark and his men took Fort Sackville from the British.
We had a great time learning a little history and spending time with my husband. This little trip made me want to visit other nearby historical sites so that my children can learn more about the history of where they live. Most of them are free or cost very little to visit and would be great for a hands-on history lesson.
Have you visited any local historical sites near your home this summer?
