Today I can am checking another item off of our summer bucket list. One of the items on our list was to play with ice that had toys frozen inside. On Friday we did just that.
With the temperatures reaching over 100 degrees all last week, I thought it would be the perfect time to let the kids have fun with some colored ice. While I was working in the garden Friday morning my 4 youngest children, under the supervision of my almost 13 year old, played with this ice for 25 minutes.
It was already in the 90’s at 10:00 a.m., so they were very glad to keep cool this way.
The night before I filled my silicone muffin pans with water and 2 drops of food coloring per cup. Then I put them in the freezer on a cookie sheet for stability. Regular muffin pans will work but may have to have a little water run over the bottom of the pan to make it easier to release them.
I also filled a Bundt pan with water, 4 toys, and 4 drops of food coloring. I thought it would make a neat marble effect, but when I moved the pan to the freezer all of the colors got muddled together.
If I had put the food coloring in the pan after I had set it in the freezer I think it might have worked.
The next morning I put all of the colored ice into a plastic tote box and added about 1 inch of water. I am not sure that the water was necessary, but I thought it might make the melting process a little faster and provide a little more fun.
With the hot outside temperatures the ice started melting right away.
Janna picked up some ice. When she set it down she just kept looking at her hands. She was learning about how cold ice can be. 🙂
After probably 15 minutes my 9 1/2 year old decided that the sun could be used to help melt the ice more so that they could get to the toys faster. That boy is always thinking. He reminds me so much of his daddy. I love it!
One broken spoon and a few minutes later, the boys had all 4 toys out of the ice ring.
They played with the icy water for a little while longer. They kept saying they were fixing their daddy some tea because all of the colors melting together made the water turn brown. I don’t think he would have wanted to drink that!
The kids had so much fun! We will definitely be playing with ice again. It was definitely a cool way to play outside on a hot morning. Have you ever done something like this for your children?
