A few weeks ago I posted about salt dough ornaments. Well, today I wanted to show you another way the salt dough recipe can be used. I have been babysitting for some children on Tuesdays and Thursdays this semester. I wanted to help them make something special for their parents for Christmas. So, I decided to make some salt dough handprints.
I first made the dough (1 cup salt, 1 cup water, 2 cups flour) and then rolled a good sized piece into a ball. Then I used a rolling pin to flatten it to about 1/4″ thickness. I helped the girls push their hands into the dough. I placed their handprints on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. I baked them for about 2 hours in a 250 degree oven. Then I let them dry on a wire rack until the girls came back.
Yesterday they picked out their favorite colors and painted their handprints. When they were dry I put them in a small box and let the girls wrap them. They had a lot of fun and were excited for their parents to open them.
This frugal and fun idea would be great for any special occasion. Mother’s Day comes to mind especially. So far, I have made ornaments and handprints with this dough. I wonder what else we could make with it…
