We started by reading the book Sun Song by Jean Marzollo. This rhyming story is beautifully illustrated with pictures of several different animals. The story covers one full day from the dawn of one day to the dawn of the next. It is a sweet book that we all enjoyed.
Mister Golden Sun,
Please shine down on me
Mister Golden Sun,
Hiding behind a tree…
These little children
Are asking you
To please come out
So we can play with you
Oh Mister Sun, Sun,
Mister Golden Sun,
Please shine down on me!
A few of the children had some trouble with this lacing activity, but they all worked hard and were proud of the end result.

I made up a set of sun themed number cards. They were a center activity that the children were to put in the correct order. You may download them by clicking the box above.
Later we made spotted snakes out of the letter “S”. I had seen an idea for making “S” snakes at No Time For Flashcards, but modified her idea some.
First, the children colored a letter “S” paper that I printed from Itty Bitty Bookworms and I cut them out. They glued them to a piece of construction paper and added two wiggly eyes and a red tongue. To make their snakes spotted I gave each child 8 colorful stickers and they put them on their snakes. I asked each child to count the number of spots their snakes had when we were finished. This was a way to incorporate a little math into our letter activity.
We also used some of the gak we made when we studied the letter “G” to make slippery, slimy snakes and the letter “S”.
We finished our morning by making sticker stories. I gave each child a set of small stickers, a piece of paper, and some crayons. They were to make a picture with their animal stickers and then I wrote what they wanted to say about their picture. For example, the picture above features a barn with all sorts of farm animals. The children enjoyed this activity.
We had a great morning and I am hopeful my son will be well enough to join us on Wednesday when we will be doing lots of snow related activities. Check back tomorrow for a frugal and fun Valentine’s day idea.
