A few months ago my husband was going to get rid of the microwave cart pictured below. We purchased it when we first got married, but haven’t needed it since we moved to this house 11 years ago.
It has been in our garage ever since. I asked him to hang onto it just a little longer, and last week I decided to do something with it.
The first thing I did was to wipe the dust and dirt off of the cart.
Then I sanded it all over. I admit that I could have done more sanding since this is one of those laminate carts and not “real” wood.
I found some lovely toile fabric that I thought would be fun to use on the cart. It was a heavier weight fabric, and if I were to do this again I would choose a lighter weight fabric or even paper. I
chose the fabric because I simply love toile designs. My mom had this hanging planter that was green and white and I used to love looking at it when I was a girl. I guess I just have a thing for toile. I even embroidered 90 quilt squares with toile designs 4 years ago. I think you get the idea about my love of toile. ![]()
Anyway, I painted the cart with a few coats of white paint I had leftover from various projects. Then, I cut pieces of fabric the same size as the top, sides and door panels of the cart.
I applied Mod Podge to the cart (one section at a time) and smoothed out the fabric pieces on top.
Next, I smoothed out the air bubbles and applied two coats of Mod Podge to the top.
Once everything was dry, the old microwave cart didn’t looks so old and found a new home in our living room. I already had the little lamp in storage, and the basket was originally a plain wicker basket. Thanks to some spray paint I already had, it matches nicely.
I used more of the blue spray paint to paint the gold pieces that go under the door knobs. Then I switched the knobs out for some plain white knobs that were left from a previous project.
My husband shocked me when he saw the cart. I was prepared for him to say it was hideous. However, he said he thought it looked good and he couldn’t believe it was the same cart. That’s good enough for me. ![]()
