Letter U Activities

Today we finished our study of the short sound of the letter “U”. We had a fun morning!

We started our morning by reading the book The Ugly Duckling retold by Marc A. Cerasini. This is the classic ugly duckling story and I chose it mainly because it had several words with the short “U” sound like ugly, duckling and up. However, the story also prompted a good discussion about hurtful words and how they make us feel.

After the story the children colored a letter “U” paper from DLTK. This was really nice because it already had umbrellas on it. These papers will go in the children’s alphabet binders.

Later the children had to follow my directions for coloring this umbrella counting paper. I would ask them to get out a specific colored crayon and then color a certain umbrella. For example, I asked the children to get out a green crayon and color the umbrella with a number 4 under it.

We also put together a cute “Umbrella Man” book from Homeschool Share. The children loved the song which is to the tune of “The Muffin Man”.

The children took home their folders today. They had painted them on Wednesday using the paint colors of their choice. My son said he made a dolphin on his folder. It had nothing to do with the letter “U”, but he had fun painting it.

Inside each folder was a copy of a letter “U” tracing page and mini book from First School, the umbrella number activity from above, their “Umbrella Man” book from above, a picture of “up” and “under”, and a copy of an umbrella poem from Wednesday.

We finished our morning with some name writing practice. Monday (assuming the weather cooperates) the children will be back to start learning about the letter “V”. Have a great weekend.
