Letter J - Jellyfish

Today we continued our study of the letter “J” by learning about jellyfish.  I showed the children the pictures from the book Jellyfish, but it had too much information for preschoolers.  I couldn’t find any fiction jellyfish books at the library, so I read the book Over in the Jungle: A Rainforest Rhyme by Marianne Berkes.  It was a cute counting story about jungle animals.

After our stories we made “j” jellyfish.  The children colored and cut out a lower case letter “j”.  Then they glued on a pink jellyfish I had pre-cut and glued the “j” on top.  I got the idea from Totally Tots, but made some modifications.

Later the children made jellyfish out of a paper plate and some curling ribbon.  They colored the plate and then we taped lengths of ribbon to the back.  They had fun with these.  I got the idea from Ramblings of a Crazy Woman.

The jellyfish were perfect for acting out a finger play I taught the children from Preschool Playbook.  You should check out the site because there is even a video of the motions with the finger play.

Mr. Jellyfish
Five little plankton swimming in the sea.
Teasing Mr. Jellyfish, “Can’t catch me!”
Along comes Mr. Jellyfish, quiet as can be.
ZAP!
Four little plankton swimming in the sea.

Continue the rhyme counting down to the last plankton(4 little plankton, 3 little plankton, etc). The last verse would go as follows:

One little plankton swimming in the sea.
Teasing Mr. Jellyfish, “Can’t catch me!”
Along comes Mr. Jellyfish, quiet as can be.
ZAP!
Watch out for jellyfish floating in the sea!

For a snack today the children drank juice and put jelly on a piece of toast.  I was surprised at how difficult this seemed to be for some of the children.  I think it was a good real world way to practice fine motor skills.

We had a great morning.  We will finish our study of the letter “J” on Friday when we will do some activities with jellybeans.
