Letter J - Jaguars and Jungle

Jaguars (Pebble Plus)

Today we started our study of the letter “J” by learning about jaguars.  We read the book Jaguars by Helen Frost.  This book was a simple nonfiction book that was just right for preschoolers.  It gave enough information and photographs to keep them interested.

After our story the children made letter “J” jaguars.  They first colored a “J” yellow and added black spots.  Then they cut them out and glued them to a piece of construction paper.  They added 4 legs, a nose/mouth, and two ears I had pre-cut.  A wiggly eye finished off the jaguars.  I got this idea from Totally Tots.

Later I taught the children a jaguar song I found at this site.  There were more verses, but I thought this was long enough.

The Jaguar (Tune:  The Farmer in the Dell)

The jaguar is a cat.
The jaguar is a cat.
Hi Ho the Derry O
The jaguar is a cat.

The jaguar has black spots.
The jaguar has black spots.
Hi Ho the Derry O
The jaguar has black spots.

The jaguar can run fast.
The jaguar can run fast.
Hi Ho the Derry O
The jaguar can run fast.

It lives in the jungle.
It lives in the jungle.
Hi Ho the Derry O
It lives in the jungle.

Finally, I asked the children to draw a rain forest.  Then I gave them a jaguar sticker and asked them to put it either on the ground or on a low branch of their tree.  I also gave them some other rain forest animals to add to their picture.  When they were finished I asked them to tell me the story of the jaguar in their picture.  I wrote what they dictated on the back.  The children always love to see stories they have made up written down.

We had a great morning.  The children will be back on Wednesday when we will learn about jellyfish.
