Today we finished our study of the letter “E” by learning about elephants. I started by reading some information from a Zoobook about elephants.
Next, I had the children paint two paper plates with grey paint. Once the plates were dry I cut a trunk and ears out of one of the plates. I also cut two circles from black paper and two tusks from white paper. I showed the children how to glue everything together and their elephants were complete.
While the grey paint was out for our paper plate elephants, I brushed some paint on each child’s hand and had them stamp it onto a white piece of paper. When they were dry I asked the children to draw a scene and gave them some examples of adding trees, grass and the sun. When they were finished I wrote the story of each child’s elephant on the back of the paper as they dictated it to me. The little girl whose picture is shown above told me that her elephant was named Trunk and that he got hot in the sun and went under a tree to cool off.
The children also completed this letter “Ee” tracing paper from DLTK-Kids. They first colored the papers and then glued wiggly eyes onto the letters. These papers will go in each child’s alphabet binder.
I did read the children a story today. Since I hadn’t been to the library I didn’t have an elephant book. So, I read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Suess.
Finally, the children completed a letter “E” paper that I created. You may download and print a copy here.
We had a good morning. The children will be back Monday when we will start our study of the letter “F”. Have a great weekend!
