Today we continued our study of the letter “D” by talking about dogs. We started by reading the book Go, Dog, Go! by P.D. Eastman. This simple book is one that my kids have all liked plus it has some great examples of opposites. Besides, who doesn’t love dogs doing things humans might do?
After our story I had the children color a lowercase letter “d”. I helped them cut it out and left a small amount of the opening to serve as a door. Then the children glued the letters to a piece of paper.
Next, I had the children open the “doors” and put a dog sticker inside. y using a dog sticker we were able to have two “d” things in our craft. found this idea at No Time For Flashcards.
We also talked about what things dogs need and the children came up with food, water, exercise, a place to sleep and toys. After that I taught the children the song B-I-N-G-O.
B-I-N-G-O
There was a farmer had a dog,
And Bingo was his name-O!
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O
And Bingo was his name-O!
Continue singing replacing the letter “B” with a clap and so on until you have sung enough verses to clap each letter instead of sing it.
Later, we made these dog puppets out of an envelope and some construction paper scraps. I first had the children color a business sized envelope. Some of the children chose to make spots. Then I sealed the envelope flap and cut a slit in the center of the envelope front. We folded the envelopes and then glued on ears, a nose, a tongue, and eyes. To use the dog as a puppet the children put their four fingers in the top opening and their thumb in the bottom opening. I found this idea at Twiggle Magazine.
We had a fun morning and will finish our study of the letter “D” on Friday.
