Letter D - Dinosaurs

dinosaur book

Today we started studying the letter “D” by learning about dinosaurs. We started our morning by reading the book I Can Read About Dinosaurs by John Howard. This book had lots of information and drawings of dinosaurs. But the children seemed interested in the names and sizes of the dinosaurs.

D is for Dinosaur

After our story we made these letter “D” dinosaurs. The children colored the letters and then cut them out. Next, they glued them to the center of a piece of construction paper. I had already pre-cut 3 rectangles, 5 triangles, 1 oval and a tail shape.

The children followed my directions as to how to glue the shapes to their letter “D’s” to make them look like dinosaurs. Finally, the children glued a wiggly eye to their dinosaurs and made a mouth. I got this idea from Totally Tots.

Dinosaur Footprint

Later, I brought out this 3 foot x 4 foot “brontosaurus” footprint I made last year. The children took turns standing on it. It was a great size comparison activity.

Dinosaur Shapes Worksheet

I saw this dinosaur shape printable last week at Yellow Mums and thought it would be good for today. We talked about the different shapes and then the children matched the correct shape to the matching dinosaur.

I also taught the children a new finger play today.

Dinosaurs Five

Five big dinosaurs, five and no more;
One chased a butterfly and then there were four.

Four big dinosaurs eating on a tree;
One went for a swim and then there were three.

Three big dinosaurs didn’t know what to do.
One went fishing and then there were two.

Two big dinosaurs still can have fun,
But one went for dinner and that left one.

One big dinosaur watched the setting sun.
He closed his sleepy eyes and then there were none.

Dinosaurs and Play Dough Play

Finally, I let the children use play dough and our dinosaur play set to have some free play time. They made footprints, nests and eggs, and just had a lot of fun.
