Today we continued our study of the letter “C” by learning about chameleons and colors. We started by reading the book The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle. In this story a chameleon isn’t happy with the way he is and wants to be like all of the animals in the zoo. What results is a very mixed-up chameleon. In the end he realized he is perfect just the way he is. I made sure to tell the children that they are each special just they way they are, too.
We also talked about chamoflauge and how animals, like the chameleon, use it to protect themselves. Then we practiced saying the word chameleon. I heard a lot of “millions” instead of “chameleon”.

After our story we made letter “C” chameleons. I asked the children to first color a lower case letter “c” and then had it cut them out. I already had the heads, tails, legs and tongues cut out and had the children glue them to their papers along with the letter “c” as shown above. Finally, they glued a wiggly eye to the head. I found this idea at Totally Tots.
We also talked about colors today. During snack time I gave each child a package of fruit snacks and asked them to sort them by color. Then we counted how many of each color we had and compared them to each others package contents. Of course, I let them eat them when we were finished.

I had a couple of color sorting activities set out for centers today. The first is one I have shared here before, but thought I would share the link to my original post again just in case anyone was interested in knowing more about it.

This was a new activity for us to try. I found this three compartment tray at a dollar store for only 75 cents. I taped three colors of paper to the inside and set out an assortment of pom poms and some play dough tweezers. I asked the children to use the tweezers to put the pom poms in the correct spot.
We had a great morning and will finish our study of the letter “C” on Friday.
