Caterpillars are such fascinating creatures, especially to children. What’s not to love about a creepy crawly thing that can turn into a beautiful butterfly? 🙂
My son has been showing everyone the caterpillar he made from a capital letter C, and is so proud to have it hanging on our refrigerator.

To make a caterpillar from a capital C you will need a large letter C. I printed this one from Itty Bitty Bookworms.
Then, my son colored it and we cut it out.

Next, my son glued the C to a piece of construction paper and added pom poms (10 to be exact-great counting activity), wiggly eyes, and pipe cleaner antennae. What a colorful caterpillar!
We have three great books that I like to read to my kids to help them understand the process that occurs when a caterpillar turns into a butterfly.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
by Eric Carle is a favorite among the preschool crowd. The book not only shows how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly, but it also shares the concepts of the days of the week and numbers/counting.
The Caterpillar and the Polliwog by Jack Kent is a favorite of ours. A polliwog is so busy watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly that he doesn’t realize he is turning into a frog. Very cute!
A Monarch Butterfly’s Life by John Himmelman is beautifully illustrated and gives a more realistic account of the life cycle of a monarch butterfly.
I recommend all three books, but especially the first two because they keep preschoolers interested and they will probably ask you to read them over and over and over… 🙂

A final activity my son did was to arrange five leaves in numerical order.

Then, he used tweezers to place the correct number of caterpillars (small pieces of pipe cleaners) on each leaf. This activity enhances fine motor skills and one-to-one correspondence at the same time.
We had a great time learning about caterpillars. I can’t wait to do some more letter C activities with my son this week. 🙂
