Today we studied the letter “C” by talking about carrots. We started our morning by reading The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss. This classic story tells about a boy who doesn’t give up even though others tell him he should. He knows his carrot seed is going to produce a carrot and he is willing to work hard to see that it does. This is definitely an encouraging story about never giving up put into simple terms for little ones.

After our story we made these letter “C” carrots. I broke this activity up into two parts. First, I gave each child some orange paper and scissors. I asked them to cut it into pieces. This was great cutting practice. If they had had too much trouble they could have ripped the paper. Then they applied glue to a large letter “C” and covered it with their orange papers.
When we came back to this project the children glued their “C’s” to their papers. I then gave each child a small piece of green paper and asked them to cut some snips in it down to a line I had drawn. We curled the ends around a pencil and then glued it to the paper. I had seen the idea for making a letter “C” carrot from No Time For Flashcards, but modified her idea.
Of course, we had carrots for our snack time. 🙂

Our final carrot themed activity was to use carrots and paint to practice writing the letter “C”.
We had a great morning and will continue our study of the letter “C” on Wednesday.
