I knew my five year old son was a lefty before he was one year old. When he was little I wasn’t sure what that would mean when it came to his handwriting. I really just let him go at his own pace and didn’t push him. He has really improved lately on how he holds a writing utensil and has much better control when writing.
He has really been enjoying practicing his letters on this laminated placemat I purchased from Walmart several years ago. He thinks it is cool that he gets to use a marker and I think it is cool that he wants to practice writing.
The nice thing about this laminated placemat is that if he makes a mistake he can just wipe it off. This also eliminates the amount of paper we go through. If you find a placemat like this it might be worth it to purchase one.
You could also make your own by placing a printout into a clear sheet protector or if you have access to a laminator that would work as well. Just make sure that you keep handwriting practice fun and give lots of praise.
