Welcome to week 3 of my 6-week guide to making a simple T-shirt quilt.
So far we have gathered our supplies and cut the T-shirts. Today we are going to iron interfacing on each T-shirt block.
You will need lightweight fusible interfacing for this step. You can purchase it in packages or by the yard. I got a great deal on packages of interfacing for only 75 cents each!
Cut the interfacing to the same size as your T-shirt blocks. Mine are 12 1/2 inches square.
Some people may say that you need to cut the interfacing 1/4 inch smaller all the way around than your quilt block, but it will work alright for this project if the interfacing and the T-shirt are the same size.
After you get the interfacing cut out you need to iron it to the back of each T-shirt.
The interfacing should feel slightly bumpy on one side and smooth on the other. You want to make sure that the “bumpy” side is facing the back of the T-shirt and that you iron it on the smooth side.
Look at the difference that the interfacing makes. The T-shirt on the left doesn’t have interfacing and the one on the right does.
The interfacing makes each T-shirt block more stable and is an essential step in this T-shirt quilt-making process.
Next week we will be ready to sew the T-shirt blocks together. Breaking this process down into manageable chunks makes it so much easier.
