Homemade Grocery Bag

I had been trying to think of a creative way to package the shower gift I posted about here. (I also added a bottle of my homemade fauxbreeze to the gift set.) So, when I saw this idea last week I thought it would be good to try.

However, I thought it might be easier to use Heat and Bond and just iron the fabric on the bag. That way anyone who has an iron could do this, even if they didn’t sew. Sounds like a good idea, right?

Well, it wasn’t a good idea. Let’s just say that my iron and the bag weren’t a good match. After I melted a hole in the grocery bag I got a little distraught. Note to self: Do not iron the reusable grocery bags they sell in stores.

Thankfully, the bag I was using was one I got free from Kroger’s recently when you could design a logo on their website and get a bag. All was not lost though. I cut up the bag and used it as a template to make this bag.

I used a lightweight cotton for the outside and a denim-like fabric for the inside. Basically, I made two bags, stitched them together at the top, and added handles. I think this will be a sturdy and washable bag, so my mistake actually turned out fine. A bonus was that I already had the fabric and handles.

Sometimes crafty ideas work out and sometimes they don’t. I just try to roll with it and learn from my mistakes. 🙂
