Homemade Finger Paint Recipe

For our finger painting yesterday I tried a new recipe.  I found the same recipe on multiple sites, so I am not sure who to give credit to.  I took pictures of the process so that you could see exactly how to make this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup Cornstarch
  • 2 Cups Cold Water
  • 1/4 Cup Liquid Dish Soap
  • Food Coloring
1.  Mix the sugar and cornstarch in a small pan.
2.  Slowly add the cold water and mix thoroughly.
3.  Cook the mixture over low heat, stirring frequently, until it is smooth and gel like.  Once it starts to boil, turn it off.  It will take at least 5 minutes to get to this point.
4.  Add the dishwashing liquid and stir.  I think clear or white dishwashing liquid would work best, but all I had was Dawn.  It seemed to be fine though.
5.  Divide the mixture into small containers.  Stir in food coloring.  I added 8 drops of liquid food coloring to each container.  The colors were vibrant, but did stain our hands.  I might try 5 drops next time and see what happens.   Put a lid on each container when not in use.  I used some empty plastic baby food containers that I had been given.
6.  Allow your child to try out the new finger paint.
7.  Admire your child’s masterpiece.
I think that these paints would work with a paintbrush, but painting with fingers is so much more fun.  :-)  A little of this finger paint goes a long way.  I think it should last us quite a while.
