Homemade Deodorant

January 28, 2009 By Jackie 7 Comments

Those who know me are aware that I enjoy a good DIY project. So, it should come as no surprise that when I ran out of my natural deodorant I would try to make my own. I followed the recipe I found on this site. I am happy with the results so far. It contains only three ingredients (equal parts of cornstarch, baking soda and coconut oil). I love that there is no aluminum and that the ingredients are all natural. I think it is a frugal option as well since some of the natural deodorants are pricier than their regular drugstore counterparts. I am thinking that it might be nice to add a drop or two of an essential oil the next time I make this.

I love this recipe!! I have used it for awhile now. It works even when I go hiking or do other really sweaty work. In the winter I use a candle warmer (while I shower) to soften it up since the coconut oil gets hard when the temp drops.

Thanks, Debbie. I love your idea of the candle warmer. I would never have thought of that! My mom and I both love this recipe. Works great!

Does the homemade deodorant make your under arms greasy? Does it work as a antiperspirant also? Thanks so much, Monica

You can dust some cornstarch or baking soda over after applying it if you find that it’s greasy! 🙂

      Thanks for sharing, Kaely.

I have a couple questions… does this harden enough that I could put in deodorant container? Also do you think its safe and effective for boys. Mine is 9 and uses a mild deodorant since he started pit smelling really early. I would love to get everyone off of commercial made body and food products.

Hi, Jennifer. Thanks for your questions. It does not harden enough to put it into a container. However, adding beeswax makes it hard enough to put in deodorant tubes. I will try to update this post with the amount. I do think it is safe for boys because it doesn’t have anything in it but ingredients you would eat. I am with you on getting off of all of the commercially made products.
