H is for House

We had a great morning learning about the letter “H” and the color black. Here are some of the highlights.

We started our study of the letter “H” today by reading the book The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton. This book was one of my favorites when I was a girl. I am not exactly sure what it is that I have always been drawn to about this book. I guess being a country girl I loved the fact that the little house, who started out in the country and eventually was in the city due to urbanization, was rescued and able to live in the country again by the end of the story.

After reading the story we made these cute little houses out of the letter “H”.

I got the idea from this site. First, the children colored the letter “H” papers I had printed from the Itty Bitty Bookworm site. Next, I cut out the letters and had the children glue them to black paper (our color of the week). Then, the children had to follow my directions to know where to glue the windows (squares), door (rectangle), roof (triangle), and chimney (rectangle). I think they turned out really cute and were great for a lesson in following directions.

We also traced the letter “Hh” papers I printed from DLTK-Kids. Then the children put foam heart stickers on the letters. These will go in their alphabet binders.

Today was the first day I got out the pattern blocks for the children. I found a horse template from Prekinders. The children did really well filling in the shapes. When they were finished I let them make patterns and manipulate the blocks. They really had a good time learning with the colored shapes.

We sang two songs today: The Hokey Pokey and I’ve Got the Letter Hh

The Hokey Pokey

You put your right foot in,
You put your right foot out,
You put your right foot in
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey
And you turn yourself around,
That’s what it’s all about.

You put your left foot in,
You put your left foot out,
You put your left foot in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey
And you turn yourself around,
That’s what it’s all about.

You put your right hand in,
You put your right hand out,
You put your right hand in
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey
And you turn yourself around,
That’s what it’s all about.

You put your left hand in,
You put your left hand out,
You put your left hand in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey
And you turn yourself around,
That’s what it’s all about.

You put your head in,
You put your head out,
You put your head in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey
And you turn yourself around,
That’s what it’s all about.

You put your whole self in,
You put your whole self out,
You put your whole self in
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey
And you turn yourself around,
That’s what it’s all about.

We had a great morning and will continue our study of the letter “H” and the color yellow on Wednesday. Check back tomorrow for a frugal and fun idea.
