May was a very dry month for us and, while we had some rain, my garden was getting pretty dry. While I watered the plants when necessary, it just wasn’t the same as a good soaking rain.
The two inches of rain we received over the weekend was just what my garden needed and I am thankful for how well it has been growing ever since.
I am amazed at how much some of my plants have grown since last week.
The cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli plants are doing really well thanks to the rain. The only thing I have noticed is that the cabbage moths are starting to visit my garden. It is definitely time to make some of my homemade plant spray.
The green beans and corn are continuing to grow and I am hopeful we have a much better harvest than last year.
My tomato plants are growing and I am going to have to stake them to the fence soon before they get too top heavy.
My hills of zucchini are really starting to take off. My family is excited to get to eat fresh zucchini again, but it looks like it will still be a few weeks before that happens.
The sugar snap peas have really taken off and are starting to attach the my tomato cage trellis.
We finally found some straw and I was able to add some to my potato towers that were already growing and plant potatoes in the two I hadn’t been able to plant yet.
I also added some more soil to the potato towers after I added the straw.
The cucumbers are really starting to grow and I think by next week they should be tall enough to start growing up the fence.
A couple of weeks ago I talked about how I had put up a fence to try to keep the rabbits out of my garden. Well, those rabbits are resourceful.
My husband found one stretched as high as he could to reach over the fence to eat lettuce from my counter height garden box. He also found two rabbits in the garden who had found a hole that I didn’t even notice.
So, I added some concrete blocks to that area and we have been setting live traps to begin our rabbit relocation program. While I am sure they love my garden, I will be happier if they are eating in the woods instead.
The good thing about rain is that it helps my plants grow. The bad thing is that the weeds grow, too. Once the ground dries out a little more I am going to have to get in and till again. I am determined to stay on top of the weeds.
My blackberry bushes are loaded and I am hoping that we have a good harvest this year. Last year we didn’t harvest very many which was disappointing since we usually have more than we know what to do with.
Well, that about does it for this week’s garden update. How is your garden growing this week?
