{Garden Update} Reaping the Benefits of Our Hard Work

July 8, 2015 By Jackie Leave a Comment

My garden doesn’t look a whole lot different than in last week’s update. Well, there are several more weeds, but for the most part the plants are about as big as they are going to get.

Garden Update 7-8-15

The big news of this week has been the harvests we have been blessed with.

Garden Harvest 7-8-15

We have picked 2 heads of cabbage, 4 tomatoes, a bushel of green beans, some sugar snap peas, and several cucumbers and zucchini.

One way I have enjoyed eating some of our cucumbers is in place of bread with tuna salad. I also made some into refrigerator dill pickles but left them whole this time instead of cutting them up like I normally do.

My cauliflower plants look like they are ready to be picked. I have planted cauliflower before but I have never had any grow well enough to harvest. That doesn’t seem to be the case this year.

I will also be picking broccoli soon because the heads have finally started to form on the plants.

My tomato plants are a sad looking bunch but we have picked 4 tomatoes so far. I am very hopeful that we will have a good harvest in spite of their sad condition.

While my zucchini plants look wonderful they aren’t producing as plentifully as last year. We have been enjoying the few that we have picked. Yesterday I shared on Facebook how I have been cooking zucchini lately.

It looks like one of our kittens is helping me pick zucchini. They are so much fun right now.

My corn looks pitiful but there are some ears on it. The green beans are still producing but it has been too wet the last two days to pick them.

My pepper plants are all a little on the small side but I did notice some hot peppers on some of my plants.

Overall, I am pleased with my garden. I am always thankful for any harvests we are able to benefit from. Nothing beats eating something you have grown.

My husband has already been talking about how we will fertilize our garden this fall with chicken manure. Maybe that will help next year’s garden. Too bad we didn’t do it last fall.

How has your garden been growing this week? Do you use any natural fertilizers on your garden?
