Last week I shared with you that I had (mostly) finished planting our garden. This week I am happy to report that our garden is really starting to take off.
We received a lot of rain over the weekend which, combined with warm temperatures, helped our garden grow. We are experiencing a cold snap today which I hope won’t negatively affect my plants.
You may notice something different in the picture above, besides a cute girl dressed in pink playing in the dirt, that I have never had before. I put up rabbit fencing around our entire garden in an effort to thwart the plans of a few rabbits who were determined to eat my plants.
I even bought a couple of rubber snakes to set out in the garden and I am going to put up some pie pans on string to try to keep the birds away. I feel a little like Mr. McGregor from Peter Rabbit.
Yesterday I waged war on the weeds by using my little tiller and a hoe to try to get rid of them. I sure have been doing a lot of work to keep such little things out of my garden.
I haven’t given up hope on my sweet potatoes and I think that they may actually be alright after their leaves were eaten by rabbits last week.
The 4 rows of green beans have done very well this last week. I am hoping to have a much better harvest than last year.
The cucumbers really sprouted up this past week. It won’t be long before they are big enough to start growing up the fence. I loved growing them that way last year because they took up so much less space.
Both of my zucchini hills have plants sprouting up. They are one of our favorite garden plants.
The sugar snap peas grew a lot this week. They will have to get a little bigger before I can train them to grow up the trellis I made out of an old tomato cage and some string.
Yesterday, I planted a second row of corn right beside the first row. This should allow us to enjoy fresh corn on the cob for a longer time.
The tomatoes have grown pretty well this week.
The onions are starting to pop up. I don’t remember which rows I planted white onions and which I planted red onions in so it will be a surprise at harvest time.
Our lettuce is growing well in the counter-height garden box.
All of our cabbages and peppers seem to be growing pretty well except for the one red cabbage plant that rabbits ate.
The lavender my mom gave me is getting ready to bloom which I am excited about. I had some volunteer dill pop up in the cinder blocks so I decided to just leave it.
Our strawberries are looking good this year. This one is ready. Yummy!
Janna had so much fun playing in the dirt yesterday afternoon while I was working in the garden. If I had fenced in my garden when all of my kids were babies I would have had the biggest playpen/sensory bin ever.
How is your garden growing?
