It has been two weeks since I last wrote about my garden. I had every intention of getting an update posted last Wednesday, but we were getting ready to leave for vacation the next day and there was simply too much to do. Blogging got put on the back burner.
Last Monday my mom helped me weed and till the garden and it looked so much better than what it did when I last shared pictures of my garden. I felt like I could leave the garden for a week and not come back to weeds that were taller than my plants.
I knew we had green beans that would need picked while we were gone and I am thankful my mom picked them for me. She actually picked twice while we were gone. She froze the first batch and I snapped and froze the second batch last night.
I hope to be able to can some green beans this summer, too. If you want to know more about canning green beans I have a tutorial and one for freezing green beans as well.
Anyway, I think we went on vacation at just the right time because this morning I picked 15 cucumbers, some sugar snap peas, and a zucchini.
We are getting into the harvest season so I am glad to be back home again.
Everything in our garden looked so much bigger when we got home yesterday afternoon. And, by comparing the picture of last week at the top of this post to the picture below that I took today, I would say that it did grow quite a bit while we were gone.
My corn is tasseling but it is quite short. The green beans are doing great and I am thankful for that because we love to eat green beans all year.
Speaking of the corn, the first row I planted has ears growing.
The cucumbers are just loaded with blooms and I just made a batch of refrigerator dill pickles but left the cucumbers whole this time. I have never tried them this way, but I am sure they will be good.
I plan to eat a few of the cucumbers, too.
My zucchini plants have grown so much these past few weeks.
I picked our first, of hopefully many, zucchini this morning.
While the sugar snap peas haven’t done nearly as well as last year, I was able to pick quite a few this morning.
I think I will be picking this head of cabbage in the next day or two to make coleslaw for the 4th of July.
I still can’t believe how well the sweet potatoes have been growing. Do you remember how bad they looked after the rabbits chewed off their leaves when I first planted them?
I have added straw all the way up and added soil to all of the potato towers and the first two towers I planted are flowering.
Last year I had planted dill and it grew really well. I used it to make refrigerator dill pickles. This year I didn’t plant any dill but the volunteer dill that came up is so much bigger than what I planted last year.
My mom not only picked green beans while we were on vacation, but she also trimmed and weeded my blackberry bushes. Last year’s harvest was pretty sad so I am really hoping to freeze as many as I can and make several batches of blackberry jelly.
Well that about does it for this week’s update (and last week’s, too). I am so thankful for the rain that has kept my garden growing so well and for my mom’s help.
How is your garden growing this week?
