Today I stitched up 4 fleece scarves and thought I would share how I made them with you. There are three like the one pictured above for my boys. Obviously, we are Colts fans here. I have had this fleece in my stash for well over a year because I wasn’t sure who would get something made out of it. Now, all of the men in our house will have something made from it.
It will probably take me longer to write this post than it did to make one scarf. They are simple and will keep my boys warm this winter. Here is how I made them.
First, I cut a piece of fleece to the dimensions of 11 inches by 48 inches. I like to use a rotary cutter to get the measurements exact.
Next, fold the fleece in half lengthwise with right sides together and pin. Measure 3 inches (or more if desired) from each short edge as that will be where you will cut the fleece to make the fringe.
Sew along the raw edges of the longest side using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Start at one 3 inch marking and stop at the other end at your other 3 inch mark.
Now, turn the fabric right sides out through one of the short ends. Stitch along each short end of the scarf 3 inches from the edge as pictured.
Finally, you need to cut the fringe. Using scissors or a rotary cutter cut the fleece below your 3 inch stitching line in 1 inch increments. Be careful not to cut your stitching line.
That is all there is to it. If you wanted to use two different pieces of fleece or didn’t have a piece that was wide enough you can use two pieces of fleece that are 5 1/2 inches by 48 inches instead of one big piece. You would just have to sew both long sides instead of one.
Not a fan of fringe? You can make the scarf with no fringe like I did with this scarf for my husband. Instead of starting and stopping 3 inches from each end I stitched the long side all the way from end to end. Then, I turned the scarf right side out and folded in each short end about 1/4 inch and stitched close to the edge.
I think I need to use up more of my fleece and make some more fleece scarves. These were so soft and warm. Let me know if anything isn’t clear with my instructions.
