The Five Senses: Sight

April 26, 2010 By Jackie Leave a Comment

We started our study of the sense of sight by talking about colors.  We played an I-Spy game in which I said, “I spy with my little eye something that is the color green.”  Then the children would take turns guessing what I was thinking of that was green.  The child who figured it out said the same phrase only with a different color.  We played until everyone had a turn.

Next, I set out 5 colored blocks and asked the children to look carefully at them.  Then I had the children close their eyes while I took one block away.  I asked them to open their eyes again and determine which block was missing.  We played this several times.  The last time we played I took all of the blocks away.  When they opened their eyes they had a good laugh.  🙂

My Crayons Talk
After our games, we read the book My Crayons Talk by Patricia Hubbard.  This is a cute book about a little girl who uses her crayons to draw all sorts of things.  Each page shows something she drew with a different color.

Later, the children used their crayons to make a picture for our five senses book.  I chose to share this little girl’s picture because she drew herself and her siblings and wrote each of their ages.  I really thought that was sweet.  She circled her brother because he is the oldest.  She combined math and art without any direction from me.  Other drawings included trees, houses, etc.

For a center activity, I set out this color matching activity that I created last summer.  This worked perfectly with our story and for our lesson on sight.  You can read more about how I made this activity by clicking here.

We had a great morning and will be studying the sense of taste on Tuesday.  Check back tomorrow for a frugal visual discrimination center activity idea.
